Alaska Men Love The Bush

It started with a D.U.I. In the winter of 2002 I was without a license to drive after a serious car wreck off Gold Mine Trail in Fairbanks. With an abundance of time on my side committed to walking I was able to observe the ubiquity of Alaska Girls Kicking Ass on every bumper and rear view window. Born and raised in Fairbanks I opined, what do the men do? I brought my sticker design idea to the print shop at UAA. I worked at KRUA 88.1FM nearby and attended school. We refined the design and my concept was approved and it was sent to print. Completion was delayed. Weeks turned into a month, always with a nebulous excuse. By the second month, and almost the semesters-end; I challenged them on what was going on with my project? The department head became involved and this is what they told me. My project had been delayed indefinitely because of the content being deemed offensive. The person that had been given the job to print, had decided not to complete the work because it offended them, personally. This employee decided to bury my project every week refusing to complete the job. After I brought this delay to the attention of the manager of the shop, they discovered what was going on and it became a debate about freedom of speech versus obligation to the client inside UAA printing services. Another person was given the job and I had my stickers shortly thereafter. I sold stickers out of my trunk over the years and know one found a home inside Fairbanks own Midnite Mine. I have been creating ideas on napkins for years since. Alaska forever has the spirit of those last frontier explorers, to the sourdoughs of the north, this is for you. Alaska men love the bush.
